Canary Wharf office development gets Boris' backing, despite council planning refusal

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has backed plans to develop a major Canary Wharf office project, despite a refusal of planning consent by the Tower Hamlets committee. It is the first time that Johnson has used his powers to overthrow a planning decision, since the authority was granted in April 2008.
The council rejected the plans in June, which would see a new development incorporating office space in Canary Wharf, a 192-room hotel, serviced apartments, leisure space and a winter garden.
Councillors reportedly felt that the scale of the scheme was "totally unsuitable" for a conservation area.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said:
"Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs form a key part of my economic development strategy and I have also made it clear that I consider Canary Wharf to be suitable for tall buildings.
"There is already a planning consent for a tall building on this site and the development itself would deliver a significant contribution to Crossrail, the most important new infrastructure project London has seen since the first tube tunnels were dug by the Victorians."
Johnson will now "scrutinise" the plans in detail before declaring his intention for the site. In the meantime, the Tower Hamlets council reportedly stand by their decision to refuse consent "on historical and conservation grounds", and are awaiting the Mayor's decision.
